Welcome To Chief Chimney Collectibles
The luck of the sweep became a popular tradition at weddings, where the sweep shakes the hand of the groom and then bestows a “lucky kiss” on the bride. But even just shaking hands with a sweep in the street or rubbing one of the buttons on his uniform is considered lucky, which is why you may see chimney sweeps at parades, street fairs, banquets, and festivals as well. Of course, at any celebration, sweeps have to look good — the everyday attire just won’t do. Thus crops up the age-old question of what to wear…
Introducing The American Sweep Uniform
While European chimney sweeps have traditionally worn all-black uniforms with black hats and region-specific buttons, scarves, and belt buckles, the sweeps here in the States have never had a real uniform. As sweeps ourselves who have plenty of occasion to hand out luck to those in our community, we decided that needed to change, which is why we created an official American uniform. These uniforms feature an American flag patch, an American neckerchief/scarf, official American buttons with the Great Seal of the United States, and the official American belt buckle.
So whether you’re heading out to a banquet, attending a wedding, joining the community in a street fair or celebration, or you just want to honor the tradition of spreading luck, get your official American sweep uniform and spread luck in style. The Luck Of The Chimney Sweep
Tradition has it that chimney sweeps are good luck, especially on your wedding day, but where did the idea of the “lucky sweep” come from? Let’s explore the most popular origins:
- After a chimney sweep saved his life by pushing him out of the path of a horse and carriage, King William of Britain invited the lucky sweep to attend his daughter’s wedding ceremony. He also declared chimney sweeps lucky and worthy of wearing top hats.
- King George II found himself in danger when a growling dog frightened his horse. An observing chimney sweep comforted and controlled the horse, preventing a disastrous fall for the King. In return for the favor, King George II declared chimney sweeps lucky.
- And finally, there’s a legend that a falling chimney sweep was saved by the gutter and pulled into the home by a young woman inside. Although she was engaged, she was lovestruck by the sweep and the two married.
Regardless of which is the true origin story, sweeps are just lucky! So get out there and spread the luck!
